We have an exemplary first time success rate in the Royal College of Psychiatry Membership examinations an excellent reputation for examination results overall.  Our trainees regularly excel and receive awards and prizes.  A significant number of past trainees have been awarded the annual Registrar and Senior Registrar Research Awards of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland.

Teaching is linked to the curriculum of the College of Psychiatry of Ireland and the Royal College of Psychiatry and trainees are active participants through case presentation, critical review and debate.  Training runs throughout the year and while focussed on the acquisition of clinical skills and core competencies also includes modules on psychotherapies, communication as well as service planning, management.  Teaching is in multi-disciplinary format and as well as attending, other disciplines such as pharmacy, nursing, occupational therapy, social work and psychology all deliver specific aspects.

Format includes didactic, small group, experiential and fulfils the requirements for the College of Psychiatry of Ireland work place based assessments. Our trainees are also eligible to sit the Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatry giving us international recognition.  Our posts are also recognised for GP training.

A particular aspect of our rotation is that we provide consultant and tutor delivered CASC mock examinations twice yearly and on site.  Trainees have the opportunity to present audit and research and there is a full library on the St John of God Hospital site and satellite libraries at other centres.  Trainees have full access to the Library facilities at University College Dublin.

Trainees participate in educational activities for patients and families and are also involved in medical student teaching through our links with University College Dublin and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.  Through these links we align ourselves with new teaching and learning initiative and elearning developments and we anticipate that much of our teaching will be electronically delivered in the future.

Always in the pursuit of excellence and further learning our trainees are encouraged and facilitated to attend internal and external training courses and to undertake further postgraduate study.
